When you are preparing images for newsprint publication, extra care must be taken to avoid reproduction problems. Below is a short guide to help avoid these problems.

Download and Install the newsprint ICC Profiles from the downloads page.

PC users: Simply right click each file and choose “install Profile” from the menu. Install location: C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\color

Mac OS X users: Put the files in this folder: System/Library/ColorSync/Profiles/

This way they will be available for all users on the Mac and every ICC aware application on your system.

 Restart your icc aware applications.

Change your applications colour settings as below.

Open your image into the RGB working space and crop the image to the desired size and change the resolution to 200ppi.
Set the highlight and shadow, then convert the image to cmyk using the ISOnewspaper26v4 ICC profile using the perceptual rendering intent. Sharpening should be done using the unsharp mask filter.

Please note: Using ICC profiles will only help improve reproduction. You still need to manipulate and colour correct the image.

We use the following settings within Photoshop for Trinity Mirror Newsprint Products

Our press profile Isonewspaper26v4.icc (this is the profile that must be used for picture conversion) has a dot Gain of 26% and a TAC level of 240%.

We recommend that you do not exceed 240% TAC as the printers will have set- off problems (black ink being transfered to the opposite page).

This profile must be used when converting any picture that will be printed on Trinity Mirror Newsprint.

Pictures to be cropped at a resolution of - 200ppi = 100LPI

Highlight Settings Colour - 0%-1%

Shadow Settings Colour - C59% M45% Y40% K95%- These figures are within the press profile (this gives us our 240% TAC)

Set a white point and dark point using the pipettes in the curves dialogue box (Apple M).

To assist in identifying the darkest neutral point, the info tool should display Greyscale and CMYK

modes. The highest reading in Greyscale identifies the darkest point.

You can only set the shadow while in RGB mode not CMYK as the shadow cmyk breakdown will be

incorrect.

Highlight Settings Mono - First Printing Tone 1%

Shadow Settings Mono - 95% - 97%

Every picture will also need to be accessed on an indervidual basis for the application of Sharpness due to cropped size.

We reccomend you sharpen your picture using Unsharp Mask from the Filter function.

This provides significantly more control than the other three inferior functions

Set Radius on 0.7or 0.8 for Colour pics 0.4 for Mono pics , Amount should start on 500 and reduce untill you reach your optimum visual sharpness.

Aways sharpen at 100% as any other ratio will give you a visual mis interpratation of how it will look when printed

The profile will not correct an inferior picture or dark pic etc, the picture quality is down to how you

manipulate the picture within photoshops adjustment tools.

Roll over image for before and after.
